When it comes to versatile wardrobe must-haves, the classic silk shirt is the top ten.
Stylish, comfortable and long-lasting, a great silk shirt will see you through many wardrobe crises, from what to wear to the office on a hot day to creating a smart-casual outfit out of your favourite pair of jeans.
It’s worth investing in a silk shirt – not satin. While satin shirts have their place, they are not as long-lasting as silk, and will also make you sweat in warmer weather. Silk is breathable and, if you care for it correctly, has longevity.
Below you’ll find our favourite silk shirts for women.
GINIA RTW SILK POPPY SHIRT, THE ICONIC, $239.95
Ginia’s ready-to-wear collection features staple items that will live in your wardrobe for years, and the label’s silk shirt collection is stunning and timeless. We love the Poppy shirt with its slimline cut and slightly longer length, which means it looks just as stylish worn out as it does tucked in.
THE FABLE SILK SHIRT, THE ICONIC, $175
The Fable is in the business of making affordable silk shirts, and their product is a beautiful, slimline cut that’s perfect for tucking into denim and workwear. We love this blue shade, a nice alternative to white and black, but you’ll also find other colourways here.
SKIN AND THREADS, SILK V NECK BLOUSE, MYER ON SALE, $178, RRP $299
This relaxed cut silk shirt from Australian brand Skin and Threads will look great with trousers and a jacket for work or you can dress is down with jeans and trainers.
MARCS SOFIA SILK SHIRT, MYER, ON SALE $79.20, RRP $179.95
Another great silk shirt for women is this Marcs buy, which is currently stocked in a rich burgundy hue. It looks great tucked in and the colourways will give new life to your wardrobe.
EVERLANE WOMEN’S WASHABLE SILK RELAXED SHIRT, $191
Everlane makes two fantastic silk shirts – this washable version, and a minimalist alternative mentioned below. We love the washable version for its ease – you can machine wash this product on a cold cycle, making caring for your silk way easier if you’re rushing around all week.
WITCHERY RELAXED SILK SHIRT, $199.95
This super versatile silk shirt from Witchery comes in six colour options so you will be able to find the one that works best with your wardrobe.
DAVID LAWRENCE TAMSIN BLOUSE, $199, THE ICONIC
Another great option from Australian brand David Lawrence who do these kind of classic pieces so well.
EVERLANE WOMEN’S CLEAN RELAXED SILK SHIRT, $191
The more minimalist style from Everlane doesn’t have pockets, and is a great choice for those looking for an evening-appropriate silk shirt. It uses eco-conscious silk, using dyes that are safer for both workers and the environment.
REFORMATION SKY TOP, $228
This one’s for the curvy girls, with sizing ranging from 1X to 3X. We love the satin look of this silk shirt, which is a great buy if you’re after a more retro feel that works for parties and evening. It’s a shorter cut which gives it a mid-90s feel. Team with a claw clip and some big hoops.
EQUIPMENT LEEMA SILK SHIRT, ON SALE, $345, RRP $430
Even on sale, at $345, this is the most expensive silk shirt in our list. But it’s lauded as one of the best – and has been for decades. We love this soft apricot version, but if you’re after something cheaper, colourways often go on sale at The Outnet – you’ll just have to be quick.
SABA SAM SILK SHIRT, $299
Saba are almost unparalleled when it comes to stylish workwear that you’ll own forever. This silk shirt is the perfect staple in a capsule office wardrobe – it’s slimline and sits beautifully tucked into work pants, with a corporate, crisp look.
ST AGNI NICCI OVERSIZED SHIRT, $349
Easily the most fashion-forward silk shirt in the mix, this super longline, super oversized piece is a blend of silk, hemp and tencel, making it soft and drapey. It is a total showstopper with oversized trousers!
ARE SILK SHIRTS WORTH IT?
If you choose correctly, yes. Think about where you want to wear your silk shirt – do you want to wear it to the office? With jeans? Do you prefer oversized looks from other clothing you own? A slimline silk shirt works well tucked into pants, skirts and denim, while oversized shirts look best left out.
HOW LONG DO SILK SHIRTS LAST?
The length of time your silk shirt lasts depends on how you care for it. When washed according to instructions (which vary depending on the product, but can be found on the tag of your silk shirt) you can expect silk to last a lifetime. This also depends on the quality of stitching, of course.
ARE SILK SHIRTS COMFORTABLE?
Silk is a fantastic fabric for all seasons. Breathable and absorbent, it will keep you cool in summer while regulating body heat in winter. It’s also soft on skin, and feels luxurious to wear.
HOW DO YOU WASH SILK?
This depends on the product you buy, but a rule of thumb is to hand wash using cool water, with a few drops of washing liquid designed for delicate items. Soak, don’t scrub, and rinse in cold water before hanging to dry in a shady area, ideally on a coathanger as pegs can mark the fabric.
