Australian No. 1 Cameron Smith has accidentally struck a fellow competitor in the head with his golf ball in dramatic scenes in the second round at the PGA Championship.

Teeing off on the second hole, Smith severely sprayed his drive to the right towards the fairway of the adjacent seventh hole.

Smith and his group all yelled ‘fore’ and signaled ‘right’ as the ball sailed towards the crowd and players on the seventh hole but with the blustering conditions at Southern Hills Country Club, unfortunately, it had minimal effect.

Aaron Wise was searching for a ball in the rough down the right side of the seventh fairway when Smith’s ball struck him directly in the head before bouncing another 40 yards.

Wise was grounded by the incident briefly and was seen holding a cold water bottle to his head. Thankfully he avoided a serious head injury and managed to play on, shooting a two-over 72 in his second round before receiving medical attention in the clubhouse.

Smith had no idea his ball had hit Wise until he was informed by commentators walking towards his errant drive to play his second shot.

Joel Dahmen, who was in the group on the seventh fairway and nearby when the ball hit Wise, described the incident in an interview with GOLF.com after his round.

“I think he (Wise) bent down to look at my ball and then the ball hit him in the head,” Dahmen said.

“Where the hell did that come from?

“You could hear it. All the spectators heard it. It was loud.

“We were in that right rough area and he just got domed.”

Smith entered the second round tied for seventh at two-under before shooting an even round to drop back to tied ninth heading into the third round.
